Scar treatment

This is care for pitted scars, where the dermis has thinned. It starts with telling which kind of scar it is.

Book a consultation

Scar treatment first tells apart different states such as pitted scars, red scars and pigmented scars, then divides the approach. A pitted scar means the dermis has thinned and the collagen structure has broken down. Filling a sunken floor and shaving down an edge that remains are two different jobs. Which one comes first is the doctor's judgment at the examination.

  • Scars are sorted by type first

A scar that looks indented, one that is still red and one that has darkened are looked at by different standards, and they are handled in different ways. Two or three of them can also sit in the same spot. Which device or product to use, and whether to split it into separate sessions, is decided by the medical team after looking at your skin.

  • Delivery splits in two

A narrow deep pit may be approached with Curejet, which works by water jet, while a spot needing height straight away can be topped up with Belotero Soft filler. A CO2 laser smooths the ridge left around the rim.

Prepare your questions

You do not need to know the name of your scar. Start with what catches your eye.

  1. The scar that bothers you most

Note where it is and what shape you see first.

  2. How and when it happened

Acne, chickenpox or an injury, and roughly when.

  3. Treatments you have had so far

Lasers, injections, other device treatments, as best you recall.

  4. Oral and topical medicines

Note acne medicines (such as isotretinoin) and the names of creams you use.

  5. Scars that healed raised

If a wound has ever healed wider or higher than the original, tell us.

  6. Your schedule

If you have dates with a lot of people, bring them. The timing is set together in the consultation.

Before your consultation

What does scar treatment involve?

Pitted scars, red scars and pigmented scars are separated out and each handled its own way. With a pitted scar we look first at where the dermis has thinned, and a CO2 laser tidies the edge that is left.

Is it sorted in one go? When is progress checked?

No promise that one session closes it. Each round we check how things have moved, then set the next step and the gap; how many rounds it takes rests on the state of the scar.

What about pain, and how is anesthesia handled?

Numbing cream is the baseline, with injected anesthetic added when the situation calls for it. The strength of the sensation varies by person.

Is there anything we should know before treatment?

Please tell us in advance about oral and topical medicines, treatments you had recently, and any scar that healed raised. After a CO2 laser, pigmentation or redness can occur, so we go over that possibility at the exam as well.
